EFFECTIVE, ADAPTIVE, AND EVOLUTIONARY.
Bushin was created in 2009 by Sensei Cailey Barker and Sensei Ian Ferguson, drawing on over 30 years of their own martial arts experience.
Through years of training in various disciplines, they realized that many traditional styles, while disciplined and structured, lacked the practical adaptability needed for today’s world. On the other hand, modern combat styles often excelled in ring tactics but didn't offer the precision, technical skill, or real-world street readiness we were looking for.
So, they set out to create something different—a system that combines the best and most functional techniques from multiple martial arts traditions. What they built was a powerful, holistic fighting system that can dominate in any scenario: whether you're in the middle of a ring, backed into a dark alley, standing or on the ground, facing one opponent or multiple.
What truly sets Bushin apart is its adaptability. We know that every opponent brings a different set of skills, strengths, and behaviors. That’s why we’ve designed this system to give you the tools, knowledge, and confidence to adapt to them all.
Over the last 16 years, we have pressure-tested and refined Bushin, constantly stripping away what doesn’t work and replacing it with new, proven techniques. And this process is ongoing. As we continue to evolve, the skills and expertise of our black belts fuel that growth.
Bushin is always evolving.
I invite you to join us and be part of the evolution. Together, we’ll take your combat skills to the next level!
Bushin Central London: Instructor
Sensei Stephen Robert Pencil
Background: Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Krav Maga, Defence lab, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, No Gi Bjj, Boxing
Before joining Bushin I had trained in Taekwondo, Jujitsu and Krav maga for several years but it always just felt like there was something missing. I was eager to find some way to combine the sportive styles that I had trained, such as Taekwondo, and the combative styles, like Krav maga, as they seemed worlds apart and, at the time, I had no idea how I could integrate them. Because of this I found myself either “doing” Taekwondo or “doing” Krav during sparring, literally jumping between stances, guards and styles mid action which felt forced and cumbersome.
Fortunately when close friend of mine first introduced me to Bushin I knew immediately that this was the answer I had been looking for.
Now, almost a decade later, I run my own Bushin class and have added several more martial arts to my repertoire, cross training in Defencelab, 4d combat, BJJ, Muay Thai and more, but always coming back to Bushin as the key framework to integrate the best aspects of these disparate arts into one cohesive and coherent fighting style.
