Who wants to be on the bottom???

In BJJ being in “bottom position" isn't really that big a disadvantage, in fact some BJJ players actually prefer that position and will train their sweeps and attacks from there the majority of the time.

However in real life scenarios underneath an attacker or opponent is literally the last place on earth you want to be. You see the BJJ world is governed by rules, like don't just stand up and soccer kick your grounded opponent in the face for example! And “rolls” take place on soft matting not on hard concrete.

Even if your opponent doesn't resort to kicks, any punch or elbow from above is going to land twice as hard and do much more damage as they have gravity and their bodyweight on their side. If you are especially unlucky you can find the force of a punch or elbow to the face sending your head flying backward to crash against the unrelenting concrete behind you, doubling the damage again and leading to a knockout.

So it is absolutely imperative that you know how to protect yourself on the ground long enough to get back to your feet, and of course its equally important to understand how to get back to your feet safely.

Now why is it important to know these things when most fights begin from a standing position?

Well personally I've always found it odd how some martial arts claim that fights never go to the ground, whilst others claim just as strenuously that fights always go to the ground and stay there. The truth is it can go either way and often does multiple times in one encounter.

Personally I like to be ready for both but the priority is always to go from any prone or seated position to standing in a stance you can defend yourself from as soon as possible.

Fortunately we train for these eventualities so our students have the tools and skills to deal with these situations.
